After going home and freshening up, Saint headed to his grandparents’ place. Because of how often he returned to Memphis, Saint kept the home he’d purchased there when he signed his first big distribution deal. Over the years, he changed out the décor, but it was fully stocked and furnished with everything he needed. Admittedly, Saint hadn’t wanted to spend a lot of time at home. If he did, he’d be forced to entertain his thoughts over what to do next with his life.

Even if he never rapped another song or performed another concert, Saint was set for life. And with his brand deals, sponsorships, and line of vodka and whisky, if he ever had children, they’d be set for life too. So far, the only business move Saint had made while being back at home was setting up a meeting with several club, lounge, bar, and restaurant owners in Memphis for the end of the month to discuss getting his spirits featured in their establishments. Other than that, he’d been on autopilot, finding it difficult to do anything but be consumed by the fact that his love affair with music was no more.

Stepping out of his Aston Martin, Saint eyed the quaint three-bedroom home he’d grown up in. All the money in the world wouldn’t convince his grandparents to move into something bigger, and Saint respected that. They wouldn’t even allow him to send them out on trips or buy them extravagant gifts. His grandfather did, however, let Saint buy him a new lawn mower and grill every few years and pay off their mortgage, while his grandmother let him buy her a new set of pearls for Christmas every year.

Instead of letting himself in with his key, Saint knocked and waited to be let in. At the sight of him, his grandmother clapped twice as she released a hearty chuckle. Back in the day, she was harder and less affectionate. She never told any of her grandchildren that she loved them, not even Saint. Now, she gave him hugs every time she saw him, so that was growth. While his grandparents may not have been the most affectionate, they looked out for him and made sure he was straight. They took care of him to the best of their abilities and made sure he lacked nothing. For that, he would be forever grateful.

“I was wondering when you were going to come and see me, boy. I missed you.”

“I missed you too. I’m back home for good.”

Saint closed the door behind them and followed her over to the vintage, low sitting couch on the back wall of the living room. They’d just recently switched their TV to something more modern, and that was Cartier’s doing. As always, Mae had the TV low with gospel music playing throughout the house.

“What you cooking today?” Saint asked, getting comfortable on the tan, floral couch.

“Nothing. There’s greens, pigs feet, macaroni and cheese, and yams in there from yesterday. You want me to fix you a plate?”

“Not yet, but I’ll get something before I leave.
